iPod nano (1st generation) Replacement Program

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Note: This battery issue is specific to the iPod nano (1st gen) and does not affect any other iPod.

You may order a replacement unit via the web. Click here to begin.

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

If you have a personalized iPod nano, you will receive a non-personalized replacement. Make sure to use iTunes to back up any data on your current iPod nano before sending it in for a replacement unit.

Identifying an iPod nano (1st gen):

It has a black or white plastic front and a silver metal back - later iPod nano models have a metal front and back. See images on this web page.

If you need assistance with placing an order, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and bring your iPod nano with you for serial number validation.

Your replacement iPod product is warranted to be free from defects for 90 days from the date of service.

DIY crimekit brings advanced malware to Mac OSX

A crimeware kit discovered over the weekend promises to bring a flood of advanced malware that steals passwords and other sensitive data from computers running Mac OS X.

The kit is being advertised as the Weyland-Yutani Bot in underground crime websites, where it's being sold for $1,000. The first ever crimeware kit for the Mac comes with the ability to grab data entered into Firefox, with the Chrome and Safari browsers soon to follow, according to Danish IT firm CSIS Security Group. The makers of the new DIY malware kit claim they are close to releasing versions that will work on iPads and Linux machines as well.

Software compatibility has long been a key selling point in legitimate markets, and it's no different in criminal circles. Weyland-Yutani uses web injection templates that are identical to those offered by the ZeuS and Spyeye crimeware kits available for targeting Windows computers. The forms seamlessly inject fraudulent fields into legitimate websites that are intended to trick him into entering social security numbers or other sensitive information. When the user types the data into the field, it is transmitted back to the malware author.

“CSIS finds this crimekit to be quite disturbing news since MacOS previously to some degree has been spared from the increasing amount of malware which has haunted Windows-based systems for years,” the firm's Peter Kruse wrote in a blog post published on Monday.

The bulletin was published the same day that Mac antivirus provider Intego warned of a new piece of Mac malware called Mac Defender that fraudulently posed as legitimate security software for OS X. Besides making false claims that a target's Mac is infected, it causes browsers to open up pages from hard core porn sites, giving the impression that the machine is under someone else's control

So-called rogue antivirus software has been using similar techniques to menace Windows users for years.

After months of speculation and waiting with baited breath, the new iLife and iWork have been released. Apple decide to skip the '07 version and has released '08 versions of both. Many changes have been made.

iLife '08 has seen some major updates to iPhoto. My favorite change is the "events". You know when you used to import photos and it would give you the opportunity to name the roll, but after you named it you rarely ever saw the name again? Well now events and rolls have been made into one and the same thing. WHen you import into iphoto '08 you name the "event" and your photos will remain organized as such. You have the opportunity to view your photos organized as events or in the old fashioned way with all of the photos laid out.
There have also been major changes to imovie. THe program looks totally different. Apple made the changes to make it more friendly for the every day user. I have yet to see if this is true.
iDVD, iWeb also have a few changes. Check out the full review of the changes here.

iWork '08 also has some great new changes. The biggest is a whole new program; Numbers. Yes, Apple has finally released a spreadsheet application for their iWork suite. Pages also has a new more professional look. Keynote has benefited from some new templates and changes as well. For a full overview check here.

For the most part I have heard only good things about the changes. I too am happy with most of them though some learning will have to be done.

Apple also released their new line of iMacs. They have new brushed metal and glass finishes and all of the specs have been upgraded. We will be getting a demo model here at the as soon as possible but they are slow to ship just yet.

The Waiting Game

During the past week there have been many hopeful inquiries about the whereabouts of Apple's new iPhone, but for the time being, patience must be had by Canadians.

On June 29th the glorified iPhone was released in the USA. It has not, however, come to Canada yet, and there is no firm word on when it will. When the iPhone was first announced in February there was rumor it may come to Canada in the fall, but there has been no follow-up information since. Apple has not set a release date yet. It seems we will have to wait an unknowable amount of time, but rest assured, when they do come to Canada, we will let you know!

For those who are not able to wait, i will attach a link which will allow you to test your arts and crafts skills and make your own iPhone.

A few weeks ago Apple updated the ever popular Macbook. They now all ship with a minimum of 1GB of ram. They have also increased the processor speeds so that the even the basic model ships with a 2.0GHz intel core 2 duo processor. The good news is that prices have not changed so buyers are getting more without spending more.

Continuing with this trend of upgrading, Apple released a line of upgraded Macbook Pro's. They now ship with a minimum of 2GB of ram. They too have had an increase in their processor speeds and hard drive space. They also have new brighter screens. The prices have not changed on the Macbook Pro line either so customers continue to get more!

Instant messaging has taken over as one of the main types of communication in todays world. All you need is a computer, an IM program, and an account to chat through. My most used IM program for Mac OSX is Adium. Adium is open source software and thus free. It is also user-friendly.

Adium has a lot useful qualities. It enables you to use multiple IM accounts within one program. I use jabber, Gtalk, and MSN with my Adium program. All of my accounts can be online at once and my contacts are all listed on the same list so there is no juggling of windows. I can also combine contacts if i have a person who is on my list with both an msn and Gtalk account for example. Once combined their name will only show up once, but when i want to talk to them i have the option to choose through what account i want to chat.

Adium's look can be personalized by downloading various new sound sets, dock icons, contact list styles etc. at http://www.adiumxtras.com/.

For anyone who is looking for an instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, and more, Adium is for you:).
